Accessibility

Our aim
We want Spirian to work for everyone who teaches maths, including people who use a keyboard instead of a mouse, a screen reader, screen magnification or voice control.
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA on this website and in Spirian Worksheets, the app at app.spirian.com.au.
What we check
- Every page of this website, and the main pages of the app, are tested with automated accessibility checks (axe) before a release: colour contrast, keyboard access, labels on controls, and the structure of each page.
- Maths in the app is published with MathML beside it, so screen readers can read it.
- Windows that open over a page in the app keep keyboard focus inside them while they are open.
- In Present mode, the single-letter keyboard shortcuts can be switched off, so a stray keypress or voice input cannot change a slide.
Known gaps
These are the problems we know about and are working on:
- Figures in questions, such as graphs and diagrams, are described to a screen reader only as “Figure”, not by what they show.
- Drawing over a slide in Present mode needs a mouse, a touch screen or a stylus.
- Worksheets printed or saved as a PDF are made for paper. The PDF is not tagged for screen readers.
- Automated checks find many problems but not all of them. If you meet one they missed, please tell us: it is how we find the rest.
Tell us about a problem
If something on this website or in the app gets in your way, email [email protected]. Tell us the page, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you use if you can. We aim to reply within five business days, and we can send a worksheet in another format while we fix the problem.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Australian Human Rights Commission.
